Career Profile

Hi, my name’s David and I’m a system administrator, DB Admin and data guy. I am working in medical IT where I do everything server related from planning and deployment over upkeep like automation, backup concepts and restores up to end of life support like server and database migrations. In my free time I still like to try and learn something new, that’s why I am still enrolled in some university courses. I also like cooking, gaming and the weekly roleplaying evening with my friends.

Education

B.Sc. Computer Science

2015 - Present
Fernuni Hagen

I wanted to get a better foundational understanding of computer science (since that is not my original background) and therefore enrolled into the computer science program in Hagen, Germany’s only state distance-learning university.</br>As you can see I am taking my time with this program as I am honestly in no rush to finish (I already have an M.Sc. Molecular Biology).</br>My main points of focus, at the moment, are data science and data mining, as well as databases and a bit of software development.

B.Sc. Biology
M.Sc. Molecular Biology

2004 - 2009
Philipps-Uni Marburg

From 2004 to 2007 I finished my B.Sc. in Biology and M.Sc. in Molecular Biology with a heavy focus on cell and developmental biology, genetics and bioinformatics. My Bachelor’s Thesis revolved around Aktin regulating factors during the muscle development of Drosophila melanogaster. </br> After my Bachelor’s Thesis I had the opportunity to keep working in the Lab of Prof. Renate Renkawitz-Pohl (this time for money) where I was conducting a data mining and analysis study to find proteases (protein eating enzymes) involved in muscle development. This study would later on provide the topic for my Master’s Thesis, which I finished with a grade of 1.6 (very good).

experiences

Sys Admin and Consultant

2015 - Present
i-Solutions, Bochum

I am mainly involved in the Administrator side of things (setting up servers, migrating content and databases, automation and scripting, planning and setting up backup strategies) and do the occasional 2nd level support.

My areas of expertise are systems administration of Linux systems, mainly Suse and Ubuntu flavors, as well as Windows Server 2012 and upwards. I do the occasional scripting mainly with Bash and Python, or SQL for databases.

The databases I am administrating at work are mainly Informix and Oracle, as well as, more recently, PostgreSQL.

On the software side of things I am also responsible for managing a variety of software deployments starting with i-Solutions’ own RadCentre and ClinicCentre as well as our Qlik Sense based Analytics Solutions.

Aside from that I am also managing some of our internal systems like Sharepoint or our ticketing system. I am also involved in assessing the needs and implementing the solutions concerning the Telematik-Infrastructure together with our customers. This includes management and installation of the Konnektor and Kartenleser hardware as well as installation and configuration of the Telematik-adjacent services, e.g. KIM, as well as the integration into our main software products.

Freelancer

2013 - 2015
www.herr-breier.de

From 2013 to 2015 I have been working as a freelancer, doing mainly little web projects and setting up custom websites and webshops for small companies. For that I mainly used vanilla Javascript, HTML and CSS as well as the occasional framework like Bootstrap or Materialize. For webshops I mainly used proprietary offerings.

During my time at the Ruhr-Uni in Bochum I was employed as a research assistant working on a variety of projects, however my main focus was on the administrative side of things where I was involved with the accreditation of the newly established Masters program in stem cell research of the medical faculty.
